It was a very traumatic challenge to one day be running a billion-dollar organization, and the next day be in the throes of defending everybody. [3:02]
We all have these pivotal points in our life, where all of our training and experiences comes into play. [3:16]
I was sentenced to 14 years in prison and I went to a pretty higher security violent prison. [4:41]
I went into the Law Library and started to teach myself federal criminal law. [4:59]
I was incredibly lucky to reverse my case twice, removed two federal judges, and get back home after seven years. [5:15]
I decide that every day I was going to get up and be stronger physically, intellectually and emotionally and I worked in these three areas every day. [7:49]
When you have had a lot of leadership positions, the key is to fix it situations. [8:11]
Now I'm working day and night to rebuild the world and I'm helping a lot of the people in organizations that were hurt through this with me. [8:24]
I am also trying to help a ton of other people, not let what happened to me happen to them. [8:48]
Most people, especially entrepreneurs don't realize that the more successful you get, the more visible you are. [9:01]
At the Academy in the military, we always say that if you're not scared, you're stupid but courage is what you do when you're scared. [10:53]
Jam accelerator is a combination consulting and coaching business that we have where we help business owners do better. [13:05]
I love to help business owners and we do it in a consulting or in a coaching model and we do in the defense industry as well as a pretty broad array of commercial business. [13:35]
I really like mostly getting immersed with our clients and we try to take on projects where we could have Uber dramatic impact on the organization. [15:31]
Commercial Break. [16:02]
I've made more mistakes than anyone who could possibly be listening to this show right now. [17:42]
My secret sauce is culture because I believe everybody wants to be part of something that inspires them. [18:05]
To do that, we have to be different and be better in everything that we do because that is what separates us from everybody. [18:58]
I get scared every day because I still feel these things hanging over me, but I slap myself and keep moving. [24:56]
Through all these occurrences and tragedy, I definitely cemented that theory that the more people we help, it comes back to us 100,000 times over. [25:20]
I'm just trying every day to lead the best life that I can lead physically, intellectually and emotionally, spiritually, believing that tomorrow will be a better day. [25:33]
Everybody goes through these terrible times and you never know what's going on with the person next to you. [26:30]
I just want to try to inspire and motivate people to get back up off the canvas, reengage in that competitive game of life, and give it another shot. [26:52]
We pray in our time and God answers in his time so it never happens when we think it will but eventually it does. [27:10]

We Understand Your Pain - Sean Campbell
Monday Dec 20, 2021
Monday Dec 20, 2021
“I am a huge believer in teaching and more importantly, apprenticeship in business.” Sean Campell
Information is one of the fundamental aspects that drive organizational success. Getting the right data and communicating it to inform decisions is the goal of marketing research. Our guest today, Sean Campbell, has been helping businesses learn and navigate their environment and stresses on the importance of continuous learning and apprenticeship in organizations.
Sean has been training, mentoring, and educating all his life. An exceptionally well regarded conference speaker and author, Sean has delivered talks for Fortune 50 companies and top tier conferences. He has also been the author of several books on technical as well as business topics. Sean has also been a professional services firm owner for over 20 years. His professional services work has spanned consulting engagements with the Fortune 50 and startups you’ve heard of, the sale of his first professional services company, and the growth of delivery, sales, marketing, and operational practices inside professional services firms. In short, Sean brings a wealth of knowledge when it comes to surviving and thriving as a service firm owner or the leader of a practice area inside a larger services firm.
In today’s episode, Sean talks about the importance of market research for firms and the work his company does to help companies get out of the valleys they are in.

The word cascade is knowledge that just keeps going on and bumping into other knowledge and growing. [3:31]
Predominantly, we're a market research firm and we go help our clients learn more about the market which they can use in ways that they find advantageous and we also do a lot of marketing activation. [3:38]
We get hire for two reasons, either pain that is a company is experiencing or opportunity they want to gain from. [3:51]
One of our more popular blog posts for years was how good people deliver bad news. [9:58]
One of the interesting thing about our client base, is that they really need us to tell them bad things. [10:54]
We don't have the ability to control the message all the way forward and back but I do feel like we're truth tellers. [12:28]
We very much watch that we bring in people in who have enough empathy that they can marry that with being truth tellers. 13:58]
What we're trying to do with clients all the time is trying to get them to understand the valley they're in, but let them see what's shining on the other side that they can get to. [15:00]
One of the things that's led us to be really successful is honestly how much we've said no. [15:40]
I would say once you are making some amount of money, you need to learn how to say no. [16:04]
Commercial Break. [17:38]
The thing that's been the biggest driver for my successes, is that I love to learn. [19:39]
Very few people read things that conflicts with what they already believe and business owners do this too. [21:03]
It takes real effort to go find things you disagree with and from a business standpoint, you need that kind of input. [21:19]
I am a huge believer in teaching and more importantly, apprenticeship in business. [22:17]
In the line of work that we do, knowledge workers collaborating is usually a good thing. [24:09]
I realized that by saying apprenticeship it creates a bit of a power dynamic where it forces the idea that someone is more knowledgeable than you. [25:22]
Apprenticeship requires the idea that someone else in the company has more knowledge than you. [25:43]
I think that it is weird to make everybody feel somewhat equivalent in the organization because the gap has to exist for apprenticeship to work. [25:53]

Friday Dec 17, 2021
Friday Dec 17, 2021

Natalie Sisson is a New Zealand entrepreneur, three times bestselling author, speaker, host of the ‘Untapped’ podcast and handstand lover. Something I really love about being an entrepreneur is looking for those opportunities for your own personal and professional growth. [4:15]
The Suitcase Entrepreneur was a love affair for 7 years where I was traveling the world living out of a suitcase showing people how to build an online business from anywhere in the world. [4:21]
I went back home and took a sabbatical and later felt like something new was bubbling but not throwing everything away. [4:52]
My business today is still similar, but it's under my own brand name and has switched to helping women. [5:57]
It became clear to me that my sort of superpower is about seeing potential and others and showing them how to get paid to do the work that they love by being themselves. [6:30]
The business is pretty much about education, teaching, but with just a far more specific aspect of helping women entrepreneurs. [6:49]
Freedom has always been one of my highest values and the way that I have built my business. [8:41]
More entrepreneurs need to actually be able to step away and recharge their batteries rather than pay lip service. [10:51]
We are in charge of our own boundaries and limitations and where our energy is best suited to that and we all need to take charge of that. [11:56]
When I had a Suitcase Entrepreneur, it was primarily startup at the beginning of the journey. [12:40]
These days, my favorite audience, are people who do come to me are action takers, who are already further along in their business. [13:59]
When you give, you get so much back, and you should never give with the sake of the camera. [15:36]
There's so many proven benefits to giving in terms of your own feel good factor, how it helps others and the long term relationships. [16:06]
It's good not to just be focusing on you and always your growth and profitability but also, about how you can bring up others with you on your way up. [16:42]
Commercial break. [17:40]
I love when communities come together and strive for better things and realize that they got the ability to be responsible and make great decisions. [18:52]
The 10k club came about during COVID after I got clarity on what is it that I know I can bring and help people with. [19:07]
I saw this as a goal for so many and I thought that's something I knew I can help people with. [19:35]
I distilled down all my years of business experience into the things that had allowed me to succeed and what those pillars were, which came down to three pillars. [19:59]
I really want to help people see their potential, and then from there, they can leapfrog into whatever they need. [20:42]
It's the consistent part and definitely moving those women from a space of always being a service provider mode into spending less time but being more impactful. [22:00]
It is a bit of a mindset shift for some of them who have always been sort of trading time for money, and looking at the way in which you can leverage online business to do that. [22:19]
It is good to think about building a business that can be run without you, it's a smart move. [25:16]
I love it when people decide to go all in and take action versus saying I'll try. [27:56]
It breaks my heart when I hear the word trial, because it usually is not intentional and there's nothing behind it. [28:02]

I've been an entrepreneur for a long time and originally it came from the desire to get out of the corporate world. [3:53]
Unplanned, I went back to university, studied, tried a few things and then became a photographer. [4:19]
Partway through my business journey I learned you could learn from others and that made it a lot easier because then I realized I could learn from the people who are further ahead. [4:35]
In my late 30s, I had a period in my life when everything started to fall apart and this led to me having to rework my own life. [4:46]
That is when my personal development journey began in earnest which actually led to a whole new career path that was not planned. [5:16]
I eventually acknowledged that there was something in the coaching and I just started taking clients who shared the life changing results. [5:55]
I started helping others, and obviously brought my own entrepreneurial experience in. [6:07]
The universe led me into learning intuitive healing and on that journey, I was clearing my own blocks and releasing my own limiting beliefs while at the same time learning how to help others do that. [6:31]
I help people basically release their money blocks but it's about so much more than money and more about realizing potential. [7:14]
It led me on a path that was so much broader, beautiful and more interesting than I ever expected. [8:22]
When our belief system has gotten the opposite to what we're trying to create, our belief system always wins. [9:14]
Kinesiology is a tool for testing our beliefs that are held in our body and it kind of bypasses the conscious mind, and tells us the truth of what's going on. [10:13]
As a trained healer, you see blockages in the body, and areas of disharmony in your clients who have blockages. [11:50]
If our belief system is not congruent with the wealth we're looking to create, we'll find a way to self-sabotage to destroy it. [14:31]
As you scale your business, you want to be scaling your belief system as it relates to money so that you can then hold that wealth. [14:46]
Your intuition is your wisest guide when you're choosing someone to work with or support your business. [17:23]
Commercial Break. [18:22]
The first part of my journey was not entrepreneurial accidentally as I was following my passion for photography and then figuring out how to make money. [20:14]
The second one was really about directly helping others and that involved learning everything about running an online business as well. [20:23]
I was doing that fully before the pandemic and that's been an absolute blessing and God sent but I had to learn everything tech wise. [20:32]
I learned emotional resilience and learning to handle my emotions, so that I get off that emotional roller coaster in my business. [21:17]
Sometimes when things don't work, it's because you're supposed to be doing something slightly different. [23:20]
We think we know the way something has to work out but we don't know that all the different possibilities nor the long term consequence of that. [25:24]
When you're an entrepreneur, you need to be flexible, you need to pivot constantly. [25:37]
Some of the Secrets to my success is first is being connected to source or God, whatever you call that higher power and that's closely linked to listening to your intuition. [26:00]
Second thing is your energy is everything and when it starts to drop, make it a priority by investing in a lot in good food and in rest. [27:14]
Third one is taking big risks and that's linked to not allowing your fears to hold you back. [29:35]
Fourth one is creating a powerful brand and that has been powerful right from the start. [31:56]
The fifth thing is resilience where knowing that miracles happen when you put yourself out there. [35:10]
The sixth thing is the ability to invest in my own personal development and transformation is a priority. [37:55]
Number seven is kindness and really caring about your clients because people resonate with authenticity and kindness more. [39:39]
The eight is getting support and being able to learn what business is about is a game changer. [40:18]
The last one is fun, where if I am not having fun, I don’t want to do it. [40:45]
It can be hard running your own business and it is really important to remember that you are here for a reason. [44:26]
Part of that journey is figuring out how to share and deliver your gifts and who needs them. [44:45]

Badger - Mike Williston
Wednesday Dec 15, 2021
Wednesday Dec 15, 2021
“You have to put yourself out there and be willing to fail.” Mike Williston
In the entrepreneurial journey, very little actually turns out exactly how it was initially expected to. That is why patience is key for survival and success in entrepreneurship. This is according to our guest today, Mike Williston, who also believes that every experience in entrepreneurship leads to something bigger.
Mike Williston is both a co-founder and the CEO of Satellite Displays. He is a results-driven entrepreneur who thrives in early-stage startups. As CEO, he is responsible for taking an idea to reality in his quest to transform the way we communicate. Satellite Displays' created Badger, the world's first closed captioning smart badge that converts speech-to-text and translations in real-time. Badger can also translate in 50+ languages. His vision for the company is what excites his team to elevate to the next level.
Mike’s entrepreneurial journey started at a young age. In high school, Mike launched his first business venture, MGW Contracting, which he ran and operated throughout his undergrad at Monmouth University where he received a double major in Business Marketing and Management. At Monmouth, he was accepted into the accelerated MBA program and worked as a graduate assistant. After completing his MBA from Monmouth University, he jumped right into the start-up world at Compliance Wave. Here he was the first employee part of the Founding Team and Director of Lead Generation.
After launching, Mike and his team rapidly grew the business which resulted in a successful acquisition in 4 years. Next Mike grew interested in manufacturing and began working with Orient Corporation of America, a 100+ year old Japanese manufacturer of dyes and pigment dispersions. While working for Orient, Mike began developing Badger. In August 2019, Mike left Orient to pursue Badger full time and his former employer, Orient, became one of the first early investors in his company Satellite Displays.
Developing, creating and executing ideas is what gets Mike up in the morning, and if you’re in the room with him, you’ll want to learn more and participate in the journey. He makes problem solving fun for those who work with him. He enjoys building exceptional teams while helping everyone hit their personal goals. His family means everything to him, and their dinner conversations range from life goals to sports to business. He developed his competitive edge from playing sports growing up. Outside of work, you can still find him staying active in the gym or playing competitive basketball. And if it’s a windy day, you can find him in the ocean kitesurfing… his favourite type of “board meeting.”
In today’s episode, Mike will elaborate on his passion for kite surfing as well as his entrepreneurial journey towards developing a tool that impact lives for the better.

I've been kite surfing for about five years now and it's a really tight knit community of entrepreneurs. [2:52]
Kite surfing because teaches you how to be patient which is a huge thing when it comes to being an entrepreneur. [3:53]
We created a company called satellite displays and a created badge, which is the world's first closed captioning smart badge that translates or convert speech to text in real time. [5:05]
It works just like a television where you can put closed captions on people in real time which is amazing because communications is really what's going to keep the world spinning. [7:16]
A lot of businesses are formed when tragic things happen or there's a problem where we were building the badger when all of a sudden, the pandemic hit. [8:30]
Due to wearing masks, all of a sudden people that had good hearing were now experiencing what it's like to not have good he [8:56]
Using closed captioning is engaging to the person listening and watching so we're kind of trying to bring that into the real world. [10:57]
There are so many stories where badger could have helped such as where translators are needed or when visiting a foreign country and there is language barrier. [11:54]
It is all about the patience where you have to be willing to show up for the win and not be scared to fail. [14:37]
Commercial break. [15:24]
My secret for success is just constantly being confident and knowing that what I am doing is going to make a difference. [17:19]
You have to put yourself out there and be willing to fail and to be critiqued while going out there and expressing your passion for what you're building. [17:42]
Every experience that you have leads to something else and without that I couldn't have done badger and satellite di [19:55]
I kept the relationships open with all of you and now, everything that I worked on back in 2011, is now coming to fruition in 2021, with badger and satellite displays. [20:05]
If you have an idea, get it to market as fast as possible because without that feedback, you can't improve, innovate, or keep [22:40]
Communication is a two way street where there's the person that is speaking and the person that is listening, and badger helps both. [24:44]
Trust yourself, and keep going on with the journey because if you can stick this out, this is a hell of a ride and it's a lot of fun. [26:05]

Dear Oprah - L. Y. Marlow
Tuesday Dec 14, 2021
Tuesday Dec 14, 2021
“It doesn't matter where you come from or what you did, you can step into who you were put on this earth to be. “ L. Y. Marlow
Breaking historical patterns doesn’t happen easily. This is especially true when it runs across multiple generations. It requires a strong will power and commitment to break off and out of such circumstances and that is what our guest today L. Y. Marlow, did. Marlow went through years of hard work and persistence to be a different story as well as to enable multiple generations tell their story and change it for the better.
L.Y. Marlow is an award-winning author and sought-after empowerment advocate and influencer whose life journey took her from a legacy of domestic violence to the opulence of corporate America and now to a life devoted to inspiring other women. L.Y.’s story would be notable enough given her tenacity to shatter the status quo, but it would be her courageous decision to step down from a progressive and stellar 20+ year corporate career to pursue her passion and write her award-winning Color Me Butterfly—the compelling and heart wrenching story behind the national organization she founded Saving Promise—inspired by five generations of mothers and daughters in her family that survived more than sixty years of domestic violence, including her granddaughter, a little girl named Promise.
This heartfelt and captivating story of tragedy to triumph inspired her memoir Don’t Look at the Monster: One Woman’s Journey to Embrace a Purposeful Life and MonsteRise—a women empowerment brand to inspire women to confront their fears and embrace their passion, purpose and power!

My journey started nearly fifty years ago, when I was in corporate America and I was at the top of my game. [4:27]
I grew up in poverty and in one of the most crime infested projects in Philadelphia. [4:40]
I was the first in my family to eventually leave Wilson Park and go to school for 16 years at night to earn three degrees. [4:58]
I had my daughter when I was 17 and was in an abusive relationship and I made a decision I was going to get up out of there. [5:20]
It would be 20 years into my career, that I got a call that my daughter had almost been killed through domestic violence which ultimately changed the shift of my life. [5:50]
I had published my first book called “Colour Me Butterfly,” about four generations that were trapped, suffered and survived 60 plus years of domestic violence. [6:03]
I wrote a letter to Oprah, about how my daughter was strangled and nearly killed for the second time and how, as a mother, was in pain. [6:50]
The words eventually led me to launch a national organization called Save me promise. [7:38]
I walked away from corporate America and had no idea how to do that or what my potential was because I was going through a tough time. [7:53]
No matter what I was coming against, I knew my life was purposeful and I was going to not only step up out of that, but pay it forward to help other women. [8:58]
Whatever you want in your life is 80% of mindset and 20% of strategy. [10:46]
My breakthrough in my mindset came when talking to a friend and I said that everything is a gift, a lesson or a blessing. [10:54]
Now even when I get annoyed I try to look for the gift, the lesson or the blessing in the situation. [12:45]
I now have come to acknowledge in these last few years that Oprah did me a favor by saying no. [13:29]
I had to go on and figure out how to build this organization on my own and step into it in a way that I not only believe in it, but it is me. [13:59]
I took my mission, my vision for Saving Promise and I launched a second company called Master rise. [16:16]
I teach women how to launch their business where I have a three-day intense mastermind and by the end of that third day you have a blueprint and on a path to launching your business in 90 days. [16:30]
I'm so good at helping women to strategize and to step outside of their lives and see a different perspective and how to get from point A to point B. [16:54]
Commercial break. [18:18]
I have learnt to be resilient and I didn't understand it until I was looking back at those times when I struggled where despite of the situation I always come out on the other end of it with resilience. [19:56]
I've learned to be vulnerable and stopped trying to put up a face that everything is perfect and also learned to accept help. [20:45]
Everything in your life is a gift, a lesson or a blessing and remember it is not always bow wrapped. [26:24]

Everything I teach is something that I've experienced firsthand in my own life and I've sort of come to an awareness around it. [5:08]
I didn’t succeed very well as a child but I was dyslexic. [5:28]
I was raised by a single mother and worked hard to complete my studies and became a barrister and an attorney at the same time and later on qualified as a solicitor as well. [6:02]
I set myself a target to become a millionaire before 30 and come 27 I hit that target. [6:34]
I went through similar events my mother went through and I never realized until my aunt pointed out to me. [6:54]
The realization was pivotal because instead of going into the victim mode, I decided I had to deal with my own energy and spiritual situations. [8:52]
My mastermind is based on the 10 core principles which I had to do myself. [10:14]
I had to experience and had to learn how to let go and forgive myself, as well as everyone else who played a part in creating the life of mine. [10:37]
Now when somebody else comes to me, I give them a step by step methodology, which changes their life beyond recognition. [10:51]
This stuff works because you have to experience it spiritually and move emotionally as well as go through the pain of removing the energy to get the transformation. [11:47]
One of the best things that I learned after forgiveness was early money paradigm and that scenario drummed into me how important our earliest money paradigms are. [13:04]
Zero to seven years of age is the primary age for your subconscious programming where people learn about everything. [13:19]
I realized I had to change the energetic imprint in me because even though I didn't consciously agree with the belief system, subconsciously I did which were reflected and reinforced. [14:01]
Your inner world has to change in order for the external world to change. [14:55]
We are too quick to judge ourselves and other people around us based on our external reality, and we don't want to take the personal responsibility for what shows up in our world. [15:02]
Most of the times we go into previous habits and those habits come from our normal way of thinking which in turn comes from our subconscious programming. [19:40]
Commercial break. [23:47]
What I found with my clients, and myself was all these excuses that we come up about what we don’t have. [26:02]
The self image is a major factor where we often get stuck in our own stories and focus more on our shortfalls. [27:01]
Entrepreneurial journey is a roller coaster and you have to take both the highs and lows with a pinch of salt. [27:15]
If you have issues with money, it will reflect in your business so you need to work more on your mindset. [27:47]
If you are not ready to fail, you are not ready for success as an entrepreneur. [28:38]
All entrepreneur I have met say the same thing and that is that they failed more often than they [28:45]
If you haven't done the inner work, the first sign of failure and even subsequent ones will make you give up. [29:13]
The third important thing is defining reasons why you want to be an entrepreneur and once you do, failure will not an option. [29:23]
You are only a failure if you stop trying and so by keeping on in the face of failure, you learn lessons which will give you the biggest boost. [33:51]
Every situation has an equal weight in goodness as it has the opposite, it just depends which way you look at it. [34:39]
Constantly have the attitude that you can do anything and when you do that you find that you win regardless of what is thrown at you. [35:50]
The one thing that you are supposed to be doing with money is becoming best friends with money and treat it with dignity and respect that it deserves. [39:40]

I have the big passion to help women sort of create a similar path that I did for my own business. [2:59]
I became an entrepreneur about 2011, but I kind of followed a very traditional path and I went to university and thought I'd get a corporate job, climb the ladder and later retire. [3:08]
All of a sudden, I kind of fell into entrepreneurship by becoming sort of a virtual assistant when I moved from London to Greece. [3:30]
When I started, I got more clients than I could handle myself and I started to build a team where I subcontracted work to them. [4:41]
I thought that I needed to let more people know about this, especially the women who were finding it really hard to either go back to work or find jobs. [5:06]
Now, the demand is never going to go down for virtual assistants because we're living in this world where mostly everyone is working remotely. [5:33]
A lot of people are turning to side hustles, or getting laid off from their jobs, and they're looking for other opportunities, and building their own businesses. [5:45]
The demand for virtual assistants is really going up and it's a great time to kind of explore this opportunity. [5:54]
You get people to shock their potential by getting them to focus on their zone of genius and handing off everything that isn't within their zone of genius. [7:20]
Virtual assistants give you your time back where you can focus on what brings you revenue and grow your business. [7:38]
I hope to help entrepreneurs by making them realize that, even though they’re feeling like they're not ready to hire a virtual assistant. [7:57]
The time that we're living in, so many brick and mortar businesses are having to turn to digital means of reaching their customers and many are not familiar. [11:44]
That's where VA could really come in and guide you and help you do that. [11:58]
We've matched about 200 virtual assistants in the past year, which is incredible. [13:24]
This gives our VAs that confidence and that momentum to build a life of freedom and flexibility and a career that they love. [13:33]
It also gives the business owners that gift of time and the ability to scale their business with a team. [13:44]
Commercial break. [14:05]
I learned that I'm a lot more persistent and resourceful than I thought I could be. [15:27]
I love being challenged in that way and I kind of became obsessed with the online space and digital marketing. [15:58]
My secret is consistency and I have shown up every single day in one form or another for the past 10 years. [16:30]
I started building a community from the very beginning of my virtual assistant journey by building a list. [16:51]
I wanted to coach others because I got so much fulfillment from empowering other women. [18:02]
As a VA, I kind of specialized in working with coaches, and course creators because I wanted to learn from them. [18:18]
I was obviously inspired by what they were doing and what worked for them and I was able to take that knowledge and apply it to my own business. [18:31]
I tell my virtual assistants to work with people that they can learn from especially if being a VA isn't the end goal. [20:34]
Hire virtual assistant to give yourself time and freedom. [21:55]

The Power of Cultural Agility - Paula Caligiuri
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
Thursday Dec 09, 2021
“Organizations that are successful globally, sometimes have to be culturally agile enough to recognize the cultural difference.” Paula Caligiuri
With the increased globalization of markets, businesses are finding it necessary to develop the competencies that would enable them thrive in cross-cultural contexts. Our guest today, Paula Caligiuri, has specialized in the area of cultural agility and says it involves awareness and the ability to put into practice skills that enhance cultural adaptation.
Paula Caligiuri is a D’Amore-McKim School of Business Distinguished Professor of International Business and Strategy at Northeastern University. Researching and consulting in the areas of global leadership, cultural agility development, and global mobility, Paula has authored or co-authored several articles and books – including her most recent, Build Your Cultural Agility. She was named a semi-finalist for the 2021 Forbes “50 over 50” for co-founding a public benefit corporation, Skiilify, to help foster cultural understanding. I studied abroad in Rome, Italy, in 1987 and unfortunately for me, the market crashed while I was in Italy. [3:30]
I ended up doing my PhD in psychology which is around what makes people effective living and working internationally, and how they change from deep developmental cross cultural experiences. [4:21]
I've just been blessed with a much wider audience now to talk about how we become effective living and working in different countries. [4:47]
When humans are under any position of stress or any sense of anxiety, we tend to cling to what is familiar. [6:42]
There is cultural agility which comes in two ways and that is first, awareness of proper etiquette norms and values and second, the competencies needed in order to be successful. [8:07]
I always encourage people to certainly build that awareness not only of the superficial things, but of the much deeper values, and then also concurrently build those competencies. [9:26]
We have to remember that culture is socialized, we're not we're not born with culture. [10:18]
We all know that when we go into another organization, we have to realize that that organization has its own set of norms and values and behaviors. [10:47]
With tech, what's happening is because we're doing it so quickly, and with such ease, we're forgetting that we need to attend to a lot of the cultural cues just like we would if we were in person. [12:00]
This is kind of masking the need for cultural agility, because we're doing it at such a fast pace. [12:43]
I've watched countless meetings where individuals from different cultures misinterpret their colleague’s body language due to perceptual differences. [12:49]
Organizations that are successful globally, sometimes have to be culturally agile enough to recognize the cultural difference. [16:00]
Professionals know when to adapt, but they also know when to integrate to create something completely new that is unique. [16:41]
Commercial break. [17:00]
I wish companies would really spend more time thinking about building cultural agility as opposed to just offering this training because everyone else is doing it. [20:18]
We build cultural agility by finding similarities with people who we don't know because we bond with people around similarities, and the only way we go there is through authentic conversations. [21:13]
The last thing companies should be doing is setting up anything structurally that keeps people from having natural conversations. [21:30]
My initial research was on what made people successful internationally and the product turned into consulting which later turned into keynoting. [22:23]
We recently formed a company called Skiilify where we provide a tool which people can use to assess your own values and competencies and learn how to build them. [22:52]
Humans form trust in different ways depending on how they've been socialized, but underlying it all is seeing someone as authentic, real and similar. [26:09]
Having those conversations that enable us to get to similarities is the easiest way to build trust and skill that will never be run. 26:20]

Ugly Mug Marketing - Wayne Mullins
Wednesday Dec 08, 2021
Wednesday Dec 08, 2021
“Brands that are succeeding today are those that can take ordinary customers and turn them into evangelists for their brand.” Wayne Mullins
The journey of entrepreneurship is filled with ups and downs which can sometimes be overwhelming. Learning how to deal with different situations and being less reactive to events happening around helps to balance leaders to focus on being productive. This is according to our guest today, Wayne Mullins, who continues influence entrepreneurs around the word.
Wayne Mullins is the founder and CEO of Ugly Mug Marketing. Over the past 20 years, he has scaled multiple companies and helped hundreds of entrepreneurs do the same with their companies. In Ugly Mug marketing, we are coming up on our 13th year in business and it has been an entrepreneurial roller coaster. [3:12]
One thing that has remained consistent is our desire as a company and as an organization to continually get better. [3:30]
Sometimes when we're enduring the great highs and the terrible lows, it's easy to lose sight of the incremental improvements. [4:15]
If things are terrible right now in your business, make a commitment to yourself to find out how you can make whatever it is you're trying a little bit better tomorrow. [4:34]
A big part of it is learning to kind of ignore what appears to be going on around us. [6:31]
The name ugly mug marketing is actually a play on a phrase from a gentleman of the name, David Ogilvy who was the co founder of Ogilvy and Mather marketing agency in the world. [7:27]
In marketing advertising, it's very easy to get caught up and get distracted by pursuing design awards or pursuing clever marketing campaign awards. [7:58]
For us, what matters is, no matter what we're doing, our clients’ best interests are the things that we should be aiming for. [8:10]
To entrepreneurs, the comparison trap is an extremely dangerous one for us. [10:02]
Sometimes we will spend so much time wishing ourselves into other environments, not really understanding or grasping that problems don't problems disappear. [12:33]
Commercial break. [13:04]
We work in three buckets, which include web development, social media marketing and conduct results-based marketing where we completely come in and take over all of a client’s [14:04]
One of the things that makes us a little bit different than a lot of our competitors is the way that we try to stand out. 15:46]
We define marketing to be your ability to attract and to keep a customer. [15:57]
When we look around the brands that are succeeding today are those that can take ordinary customers in turn them into evangelist for their brand. [16:20]
I'm the founder and leader of this company which means that its state is a reflection of me as a leader. [18:19]
How you do anything, is how you do everything and as entrepreneurs we need to be the example before we come in and start demanding other people to live up to their full potential. [19:52]
We do have to give ourselves grace and understand that entrepreneurship is a journey and a process. [21:44]
I realized I have to work on myself and learn to embrace the challenge and hardships as much as I love to embrace the good. [22:56]
Empathy is the ultimate marketing secret. [24:33]
There is a difference between acknowledging someone else's pain, desires or their goals, versus acknowledging them and actually having the ability to feel what they feel. [25:04]
When a client truly has empathy for the people they serve, everything changes for them and so I think would be the magic word for marketing. [25:15]
