When I moved into starting my own company, I found that tech was an interesting niche at the time.
When you take small bites, and adjust how you move along the way it improves performance, and enables you to accomplish goals on time, budget, and with all of the features people want.
During the economic recession in 2007-2008, I shut my software business down.
I started a granola bar business and we started growing it rapidly, but it was really hard work, and the margins were not what I needed them to be.
I went to work at IBM, and then did a program called the team management leadership program.
I did a self assessment like the very the first three months of the two years and I saw that I was a crappy boss.
The number one thing that happens in a company that creates failure is ineffective communication.
What makes the difference for people is when there's effective communication.

Most leaders are not lifting people up into leadership, and the result is that they never have a business that grows with and without them.
Both employers and employees need to be empowered to know what their strengths and weaknesses are.
The most important thing a business leader can know is what they cannot count their employees for.
In a matrix environment, honesty has to start from the top.
Don’t just be accountable, be Count-On-Able!

“Today more than ever, climate is part of the frontier narrative when it comes to the geopolitical landscape or the financial regulatory landscape.”Gopal Erinjippurath
Climate change is now a fact of life on many fronts including geopolitically and in business. As the world becomes more aware of the impact of climate change, more opportunities come up to make a difference. It is however clear, that despite there being a great deal of information out there, many business are unsure about how to interpret and use it constructively. Gopal Erinjippurath has been working with businesses to help them understand better the link between their businesses and the climate.
Gopal serves as CTO and Head of Product at Sust Global, a venture focused on geospatial analytics for climate adaptation.
Most recently, he led the Analytics Engineering team at Planet Labs (NYSE:PL), an integrated aerospace and data analytics company that operates history's largest commercial fleet of earth observation satellites. Planet Analytics serves a range of customers from city planning teams in governments and the World Bank to defense and intelligence functions across the world. He is known for agile engineering execution from concept to scalable high quality products. He has been an invited speaker at global industry conferences like Google Cloud Next and leading technical conferences in the machine learning space such as ICML, CVPR and NeurIPS.
Previously Gopal managed teams working on industry-leading analytics products from early concept demonstrations to multiple customers at Captricity (Acquired by NASDAQ:SSNC) and Harvesting Inc, where he advised the CEO. Previously he led the algorithm engineering development of Dolby’s (NYSE: DLB) first imaging display product, the Emmy Award winning Dolby Professional Reference Monitor. Gopal holds an MS in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California and completed the Ignite Program, connecting technologists with new commercial ventures, at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
In today’s episode, Gopal about what they do as a business, and why it is important that businesses begin to seek awareness of the impact of climate change to their financial bottom line.

I categorize myself as a scientists and primarily looking at data on geospatial data which is linked to location.
We are enabling businesses to understand the impact of the changing climate, to their holdings and their financial bottom line.
Today more than ever, climate is part of the frontier narrative when it comes to the geopolitical landscape or the financial regulatory landscape.
The access to businesses to clean valid and trusted data around the changing climate across the world has been limited.
Sust Global intends to transform that and enable the ability across the economy towards using a shared set of commonly known parameters around climate data.
I started my career in multimedia, and later got inspired to pursue a career on focusing environmental data.
Climate is a global phenomenon and the changing climate doesn't affect just one person in a specific way, rather it affects different people in different ways.
As climate becomes mainstream in the dialogue on the geopolitical as well as the regional and the Civic scales, we begin to see the desire in the public to invest in climate consciously.
When businesses need to enable the climate conscious avenues, then they seek to use climate data in new and creative ways.
Pragmatic solutions that brings into account the changing climate need to also account for the state of affairs today.
Being able to identify the conflicting demands of the present and the future are kind of what an entrepreneur has to figure out in this fast moving ecosystem.
Commercial break
There's a gap between the community that understands climate, and the community that wants to use climate but doesn't understand it.
We are trying to limit that gap in the venues that we serve, but it will take a while, and so the time is now for us to get more educated and aware of what climate actually is.
Previously, the big migration angle was around opportunity, and geo arbitrage, but I believe climate is introducing a third dimension.
When it comes to opportunity around the emergence of these capabilities, there has been an unprecedented lot of awareness around discoveries and the use of data.
There is a growing awareness and people having the sense of purpose, where they start to look at what they can do with their skills to address this problem, and benefit in the process.
There is also the emergence of cross functional and interdisciplinary teams, which creates some unique opportunities.
One can pick up enough of the foundation knowledge, and create a shared understanding, and then work with others in different domains to create new opportunities.
In this connected world where we're all working remotely, it's a great time to pick up new domains because big business opportunities exist at the intersection of domains.
Inherently product development is an iterative process and being comfortable with imperfection in the early days.
Work with others who are comfortable with imperfection, so that they can be encouraging and partner with you on that journey.

Spark Your Technology! - Bob Armbrister

Monday Jun 20, 2022
“If you feel like you are behind in technology adoption, just think about why your customers choose you and get started there.” Bob Armbrister
Organizations are constantly faced with the pressure of not only delivering to their customers, but doing so in an efficient and effective manner. As technological innovation increases, businesses get to decide the tools that can help them perform optimally and achieve their goals. Bob Armbrister has been helping businesses make viable decisions around technology, and says that when adopting new technology, stakeholder involvement is key to success.
Bob Armbrister serves as the President and CEO of SPARK Business Works, a business-first team that designs and builds custom software solutions in manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and professional services. He leans on his 15 years of executive experience to implement "The SPARK Way" – an approach of practical innovation that helps business leaders build tech that gets adopted and delivers ROI quickly. SPARK specializes in custom software, strategic design, business dashboards, and data integration.
Bob was recently selected as a 40 Under 40 leader by the Grand Rapids Business Journal and SPARK was named to the Inc 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies and Michigan 50 Companies to Watch lists. At Spark, we helping clients, mostly in the small middle market, make good decisions around technology.
We also have just acquired a digital marketing agency so we can help our clients with the marketing side of their technology strategy.
We want to build something that's flexible that will enable the people in my team spend as much time with their loved ones.
Where we really thrive with our clients is on the custom side where we build technology tools for clients to help amplify their competitive advantage.
We do websites, marketing automation, ecommerce among others and all of it is business focused.
Most technology failures occur when there's a closed-door room when constructing software tools, and so we have adopted user centered design thinking approach when providing solutions.
We ask clients to tell us where they are going and why, and that's important because they need to communicate that to their stakeholders when we're trying to help with the roadmap.
We start with rolling out the minimal viable product that's going to impact the business positively, and then iterate from that.
If you can bring everyone to the table early on and make them part of the process, they're going to be promoting the project when it gets rolled out.
Commercial break.
When engaging clients who have multiple business units, it's really about understanding the needs of all stakeholders and how to manage those needs.
Focusing on the end result of standardization at all costs may result in loss on the culture side.
You can still have all the great standardization and the benefits of one solution, but with an interface that's specialized for the end user.
If you feel like you are behind in technology adoption, just think about why your customers choose you and get started there.

“Even if we come up with all the best ideas in the world, but they're not adopted nor used in any organization, they won't succeed.” Patrick McCreesh
Organizational alignment is the key to any successful organization. While organizations continue to establish themselves and adopt the latest technology, it also important that they pay attention on their people and how they fit in to the overall vision of the organization. Stuck: How to WIN at Work by Understanding LOSS’
Workplace Attachments: Managing Beneath the Surface (Routledge Research in Employment Relations).
Simatree is founded on the idea that that technology is really about people, and that if you get technology right, you will be able to empower your organizations the right way.
When we come in and work with organizations, we start with people by looking at what do people need in order to succeed around their technology usage.
Our motto at Simatree is exceptional people empowering exceptional people, and from the start, we've wanted to find great people that we could bring together and align with great businesses.
Everything for us is about alignment, and when you do that with your people and your technology, then powerful things happen and organizations can realize their potential.
Sometimes organizations don't quite know why they’re rolling out a technology in the first place which can lead to a total mismatch between a strategy with a technology rollout.
The goal of what we try to do in our change management work is create a more effective alignment so that people can see themselves in what's happening.
People get stuck because they're used to doing their jobs and living their lives a certain way, which is informed by what we call MEL: Memory, Emotions and Learning.
When we come in to change that, we try and make the most effective to help them understand why they need to create new memories and effective emotions that will help them get unstuck.
Commercial break
My co-author Victoria Grady, and I teamed up and over a decade we have looked at about 130 organizations, pulled the data to write a book.
We hope that the book gives someone a little bit of guidance on how they can get unstuck for either something personal or something in the workplace.
Each chapter has exercises at the end to help people apply the concepts and the exercises at any level.
Research suggests that there was flexibility at the start of the pandemic because people did all go through a shared experience.
Now, organizations have a challenge around building culture due to increased flexibility and loss of human connection, yet building culture ultimately does require some connectivity.
If you're not thinking about how you're creating and teaching the next generation in this time, they are going to walk out of the door because they won't feel like they're growing.
Even if we come up with all the best ideas in the world, but they're not adopted nor used in any organization, they won't succeed.
Regardless of your position in your organization, the key to helping people when they're stuck, is to try to make sure that you understand and connect with them by being empathetic.
Make sure you leverage your memories, emotions and learning to connect with other people's memories, emotions and learning, because that's how you're going to get through to them.

Famously Friendly Humans - Jeff Arnold

Friday Jun 10, 2022
“Technology does not in itself, create growth, rather it allows great companies to accelerate that growth.” Jeff Arnold
The complexity of insurance products and diversity of providers, along with the increasingly essential roles of insurance, has made it hard for individuals and even some insurers themselves, to understand the insurance industry. Jeff Arnold, has been in the industry for a long time and is now in a mission to help people understand their insurance options, by simplifying the information in a human friendly manner.
Jeff Arnold, president of RIGHTSURE, INC. has been an industry leader for nearly 30 years. He is an expert on insurance mergers and acquisitions, managing deals ranging from six figures to more than $100 million.

Rateguard project is a passion project for me.
We have had lots of people working to find every available discount by every insurance company on our platform to help people save money.
Over the years, people have been programmed by the commercials by insurance companies to think that the only differentiator is price, and nothing could be further from the truth.
We created Rateguard, which is an insurance shopping platform, that has discount discovery infused in it and a lot of artificial intelligence behind it.
People spend a significant amount of money for insurance, so we teach people using our platform to think holistically about what you're going to spend and develop a plan.

I looked back at the phases of my career and was able to consolidate it all into this offering now in a neat fashion.
We took two years to design the product and build it using our famously friendly humans, layering in artificial intelligence
It has taken us a long time to get here, but we're getting some exceptional growth and that's what's fun about it.
Our famously friendly humans is our hallmark and we use technology to accelerate that.
Technology does not in itself, create growth, rather it allows great companies to accelerate that growth.
When you are intentional about that user experience and the customer journey, you can wow people.
If you try to use technology just for profitability and for financial gain, it'll be short lived, so technology is part of our business, but it's infused with our humans.
There are no ordinary moments, so be in that moment and drape those moments in.

COBOT Nation - Gil Mayron
Wednesday Jun 08, 2022
Wednesday Jun 08, 2022
“I want to make sure that I'm getting a lot of thought leadership out there in the industry, with the hope that more and more people will get more accustomed to automation.” Gil Mayron
Automation is here with us, and has been taking place at a global level for a while now. For businesses that have embraced automation, the results speak for themselves. Yet still, other businesses see automation as a futuristic development that is yet to change the way we do business. Being at the center of the revolution, Gil Mayron notes that automation is here to stay, and that the businesses that don’t embrace it will most likely decline in the coming future.
Gil Mayron is the Founder and CEO of Cobot Nation, Architects of Automation. Gil is a pioneer of the consumer 3D Printing industry aas the founder and CEO of Botmill 3D, which manufactured and sold the first fully assembled consumer 3D printers. Botmill was acquired by 3D Systems Corp (NYSE:DDD). Mr. Mayron continued to lead corporate development strategies for the consumer division at 3D Systems. He composed the first ever licensing deals involving 3D printing with Sony, Viacom, NBA, Dreamworks and many others.
Over the past decade plus, Mr. Mayron has molded much of the 3D printing industry as it relates to manufacturing and innovation. His expertise in the creative application of such technologies, not only led him to be a leader in capital equipment sales, but an integral influencer and driver of strategic development solutions for his customers. This includes time spent as Chief Marketing Officer for Graphene 3D Labs, in which he created their first collaborative conductive material agreements with Lego, Bosch, and LocalMotors, and as Director of 3D at AIS
As a recognized leader in the early adoption of hardware manufacturing technologies, Mr. Mayron currently sits on the Board of Directors for the UNLV School of Engineering. He's previously held a Board position with Mosaic Manufacturing, a 3D Printer Hardware Co. He is a current contributor and retired faculty member at the Adelson Educational Campus in Las Vegas, NV, where he facilitated their state-of-the-art technology incubator, helping students ideate and execute startups.
Gil Mayron currently resides in Las Vegas, NV with his wife and two children.
In today’s episode, Gil talks about his journey that led him into venture in to cobots. He also explains why automation is inevitable, especially where businesses efficiency and consistency is is crucial for success.

I got into 3D printing in 2008, and our company rapidly grew which led us to sell the company, but handled all the corporate development for the consumer division.
I later started to look into all the automation stuff and found that it was very similar to 3d printing and started Cobot Nation.
At Cobot Nation we do Cobots which are collaborative robotics that can work with or without a human.
All the solutions we make work with humans, and we are the only US manufacturer of automation solutions that goes direct to the customer.
3d printing is inherently slow, and we are always trying to find a way to speed it up and so automation is one of the areas that saves time.
Commercial Break
I want to make sure that I'm getting a lot of thought leadership out there in the industry with the hope that more and more people will get more accustomed to automation.
Automation allows for consistency and increased margins, and after COVID, we're seeing a massive increase in automation;
Right now I'm on a mission to get automation out there and define Cobots, as well as scale very, fast.
The legacy brands which may still be strong now, may not survive when a startup comes out with a better and cheaper way of doing things.
For entrepreneurs, enjoy the grind as it lasts, and life will get easier at the end if you do it right.

I like identifying the problem, because once you know the problem, then you can start working on the solution.
My love for solutions eventually led me to management consulting, and I've been doing it for over 20 years.
Research is structured curiosity and involves delving deeper into learning about what's really going on or what's driving something.
Of the two ways to do research which are either surveys or focus groups, I found that there is really great value in the latter.
There's insights all around us, and if you can tap into it before your competitors you get to have an advantage and a leg up to differentiate and be successful.
Business is all about making strategic business decisions that minimize risk, and businesses really exist as long as your customers value what you're offering and are willing to pay for it.
There's so many ways to differentiate, and that's the benefit of having these kind of conversations with your customers.
If a brand builds brand equity through other means other than at the point of purchase, then that will differentiate from the pricing and even the positioning.
One of the expensive things in research is focus groups because it's time consuming and expensive.
The aim of iResearch.com is make it focus group research more affordable, easy and powerful by doing it online, anytime, anywhere, and in any language.
ConnectQik allows you to create your own personalized QR code which people can scan it and get your customized contact instead of issuing business cards.
It has three different profiles in your contacts which includes business, personal and custom, and this enables you to decide, based on who you're meeting, which profile you want to share.
Once you're in connection with your contacts, if you update your contact information, it will automatically be updated on their phone as long as they're ConnectQik.
It really is more about the input of the information and not necessarily giving it.

In my book, I talk about trends giving lots of examples on what businesses have done well, and not so well, and what people can learn from them.
The book is about trying to get you to think a little bit differently, and to pursue having more conversations with your customers and staff.
Companies that are constantly seeking insights and innovating on a regular basis, as well as meeting the needs of their customers, have their employees more energized, and engaged.
If you can get your frontline people to be closer to customers, you will gain more insights, and it becomes a loop that kind of feeds itself.
In my podcast, I invite guests on and try to have an aha moment with them in our conversations that we can share with the audience.
Insights help people understand the underlying motivator or trigger that's really driving a need, and once they understand that, they're going to be in a better position to meet those needs.
We can all gain more insights and improve the world around us

The Power of Process - Slater Victoroff

“You have to get the process in place before you think about automating it, and also give people a non- judgmental and collaborative space to see the truth for themselves.” Slater Victoroff
Unstructured data accounts for the largest part of the total data that businesses see and deal with on a daily basis. This therefore means that businesses must find ways and tools to process this data efficiently and with the least cost, and also reap some business advantages. This is according to Slater Victoroff, who also insists on the importance of having working processes in the organization.
Slater Victoroff is the Founder and CTO of Indico, an enterprise AI solution for unstructured content that emphasizes document understanding.
Slater has been building machine learning solutions for startups, governments, and Fortune 100 companies for the past seven years and is a frequent speaker at AI conferences. Indico’s framework requires 1000x less data than traditional machine learning techniques, and they regularly beat the likes of AWS, Google, Microsoft, and IBM in head-to-head bake-offs. Indico recently announced a $22 million Series B raise.
Slater has educated hundreds of business users on successfully implementing deep learning through a simple framework that helps executives rapidly accelerate the adoption of technology in their businesses. Slater attended Olin College of Engineering before pursuing Indico full-time after its acceptance into the Techstars Boston Program.
In today’s episode, Slater talks about the importance of simplifying processes and how his company is helping businesses do that, specifically with regards to processing unstructured data.

I describe Indico today as the bionic arm for the modern knowledge worker, and we focus on unstructured content.
Bionic arms are not cyborgs, and at Indico, we champion this idea of the bionic arm because every action is in the person's control.
From a business perspective, you get to have one consistent way of performing processes that is represented in code.

A huge part of our philosophy is having to meet people where they're at and at least helping then work in that world.
Making enterprise technology usable, and understanding how it actually plugs into the broader ecosystem can be really challenging, yet often that is where the value is.
One of the core reasons as to why it's got to be a bionic arm, is because we have to position the technology in a way that it empowers the subject matter expert.
You have to get the process in place before you think about automating it, and also give people a non- judgmental and collaborative space to see the truth for themselves.
The biggest thing that I have learned leading Indico over the years, and even more specifically with the kind of work that we do, is the power of process.
The process is so often the key to taking things up to the next level, so walk into it with open eyes and recognize that it is a real challenge in its own right and not one to be taken lightly.

What I realized early on in my career is that solving problems was a really good thing.
In April 2010, we launched the first app in iTunes that paid cash, that used geolocation and metadata to provide real time data to masses.
In an effort to solve a problem for me, I realized that everyone had the same problem and therefore saw an opportunity to scale it.
Part of what we started to learn on the user side, is that we were helping people that were down on their luck, which felt good.
For entrepreneurs, they were able to know within a short time and minimum cost, whether customers liked their products or not.
The best advice I was ever given to me as an entrepreneur was that you are only as good as you invoice and collect, and that the Holy Grail is if the customer buys it again.
If strangers are willing to pay you for your product, and they renew, go drive it by all means because it means that the market has spoken positively.
Commercial Break
We realized early on from a user base standpoint that we needed to have advocates that were not being paid by field agent, but were just passionate about the product.
The second thing was understanding the power of the voice of our crowd and knowing how to leverage on it to solve the problem.
If you've got a great product, word of mouth really is a thing and that goes back to the advocacy.
You cannot keep asking friends and family if your baby is cute, you've got to go find strangers because they will tell you the truth.
Even if you're not a technology person, our app is not that intimidating and is pretty basic.
Relationships matter, and success and especially significance really follows the path of the depth and the breadth of relationships.
